Raising of flag at Davis/McFadden Park
“TAKE A SOLDIER TO THE PARK FROM OAKLAWN CEMETERY”
On Friday, December 7th (PEARL HARBOR DAY), the 92nd Division Buffalo Soldiers WW II Assoc. assembled at HISTORIC OAKLAWN CEMETERY to place wreaths representing the six military branches of service and to "TAKE A SOLDIER TO THE PARK”.
Over twenty-five vehicles participated in a motorcade from the cemetery to Davis/McFadden Park in Prichard. The "TAKE A SOLDIER TO THE PARK” had special meaning. With the assistance of the Blount High Alumni Association, tribute was given to MRS. MATTIE T. BLOUNT, an educator in the Mobile County Public School System, whose gravesite was discovered at Oaklawn by the 92nd. Mattie T. Blount High School in Prichard was named after the educator.
A few Members of the Mattie T. Blount Alumni, Ethel Young, Carolyn Jenkins, Flettie Tandy, sling with Rev. Odellas Moore - US Navy, Peter Dais – US Army, and Craig Savage - USAF took a flag from a Heroes memorial and placed it at the Davis/McFadden Park in Prichard.
There was a special flag raising ceremony at Davis/McFadden Park in honor of all military service members from the Prichard area. This is the first American flag to fly over the City of Prichard. The American flag pole was donated to the park by the Blount Alumni.
“TAKE A SOLDIER TO THE PARK” kicked off a fundraising event to complete the park as new ground has been added.
